Professional Learning Networks
I have been a part of a few professional learning networks over my past 12 years. These organizations vary from content specific to technology focused. I am where I am because of these people: TSA, TCEA, YouTube and the VEX Forum. The ideas for collaboration and exploration have come from them and because of them. I enjoy the community aspect that is brought to a PLN. By reading, responding, and using my PLN resources, the distance between each other shrinks. I see this very evident in the VEX Forum and YouTube comment section. Questions are sent from the other side of the world in an instant, and we can interact and assist so easily.
I currently consume from most of these PLNs I am a part of. They offer such great content and innovation that I tentatively will post. I have presented at TCEA in the past and enjoyed the conversations that have therefore sparked. I am actively contributing to the edtech network through Instagram, VEX Forum and my YouTube channel. Since I teach robotics and compete in it, I immerse myself in this culture. I often fall asleep thinking of ideas for our robotics team to try out. In this arena, I am continually adding videos or comments to pass on my team's concepts and inspiration.
At the beginning of this year, I was able to get in touch with a fellow YouTube Educator about a collaborative project. He works with younger students in South Korea and does some fantastic maker space exploration. We are looking at a way for our classes to tackle the same essential question. Elementary students and High School students working on a similar challenge collaboratively is our goal.
Which ones have I joined and why?
ITEEA - International Technology and Engineering Educators Association
A collection of great STEM focused resources and ideas. These help spark my projects for class.
ATPE - Association of Texas Professional Educators
I joined many years ago because I was looking for advocacy and protection for professional educators.
ISTE - International Society for Technology in Education
This international organization is great for seeing how large the technology impact is. I use this PLN as a resource for my learning.
TCEA - Texas Computer Education Association
Our state conference that I have attended and presented at. This is where it all began for me and my desire for technology implementation. It is a fantastic resource of ideas.
TSA - Technology Student Association Advisor
We compete through this organization and really have enjoyed all the offerings and diversity of competitions and challenges for the students.
VEX - VEX Robotics Forum
As a VEX team mentor, I believe this is essential for me. A place to read the rules, get clarifications, ask my troubleshooting questions about our programming, and bounce design ideas of others.
